History of the Mill
Although
there are few written records in evidence a licence dated
1st April 1778 granted one Nicolo Ghirlanda permission to
extract water from the canale di Verrucola for the purpose
of powering the machinery within the Mill. At one stage in
its development the Mill was also a tannery supplying skins
to the leather industry that grew up in Fivizzano. When this
industry declined the Mill was used for grinding chestnut
flour, a staple food of the area, but it is not known when
the Mill actually fell out of use.
The
English owners, lovers of Italy for 30 years or more, particularly
enjoyed the Lunigiana area and acquired Dimora alla Cascata
over 12 years ago. Deryk and Freda, who had retired, then
proceeded to carefully convert the Mill to what it is today
- a true labour of love.

"
We rented part of a watermill in Verrucola
which made us gasp it was so beautiful..."
